Bring water to a boil in a pot. Cut potatoes and carrots into small dice, chop the ham into pieces, and grate the Gruyère.

Sauté the potatoes and carrots in a skillet with butter for 8 minutes until half-cooked.

Cook the pasta in the salted boiling water according to package directions. Drain, reserving 200ml of cooking water.
