Shrimp and Okra Gumbo
A rich and flavorful Cajun classic with shrimp, okra, and a brown roux base served over rice. The spicy and deep flavors are what make this traditional dish so special.
Ingredients
- 400 g Peeled shrimp
- 300 g Fresh okra
- 1 medium Onion
- 100 g Celery
- 1 medium Red bell pepper
- 200 g White rice
- 750 ml Chicken stock
- 40 g Flour
- 60 ml Sunflower oil
- 1 tsp Smoked paprika
- 0.5 tsp Cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp Salt
- 3 clove Garlic
- 2 sprig Fresh thyme
Instructions
Step 1
Cook the rice separately according to package instructions.
Step 2
In a Dutch oven, heat the oil and add the flour to create a brown roux, stirring regularly for 5-7 minutes until you reach a chocolate color.
Step 3
Add the onion, celery, and bell pepper to the roux and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
Step 4
Pour in the chicken stock, add the thyme, garlic, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
Step 5
Bring to a boil, then add the okra and shrimp.
Step 6
Simmer for 8-10 minutes until the shrimp are cooked and the okra is tender.
Step 7
Salt and pepper to taste. Serve over hot white rice.
